Gary & Vince Are Not Here
Sunday, November 09, 2003
Oh, here's a surprise, Vince is being vague again.
So here we are then, and it's quite hot. The small pring on our malaria tablets advise us that asside from possible side effects such as 'unexpected bleeding' and 'surprising bruises', our skin will become more sensitive to the sun, and I have to admit that it's rather nice and warm here. Sure there are some ominous looking clouds congregating around the vast mountain to the north of the city, but at the moment, there is much dousing of sun cream, just in case.
Of course saying 'vast mountain' is terribly lax, I could reach into the guide book and work out which one it is, but I've only got ten minutes left online, so please allow me to be vague. As ususal.
We haven't really seen much of the town yet, being sunday, most things are closed, but it's damn pleasant just ambling about. We're at something like 3000ft above sea level (again, vague - sorry) the guidebooks advise taking it easy for the first few days. So we feel obliged to relax, which as you can no doubt imagine is mighty trying.
Thing is, that isn't quite so flippant as it sounds. You see things like mountains in the ditance, spires on cathedrals and interesting looking side streets, but for the time being at least reluctantly file them away until we feel confident enough to be able to jog there. Or something.
However we're digging around the area around our hostel in much more depth, and it seems to be full of dancing schools, internet cafes and other hostels. I suspect that hardcore travllers would inform us that it is by no means the 'real Quito', but thats fine for the time being. We've got a week to kill here, and it's going to be a bloody, long drawn out and eventful kill as we possibly can.
